What Are the Online Nursing Education Prerequisites in South Dakota?

Nursing educators in South Dakota need three things. The first is an undergraduate degree in nursing (ADN or BSN are acceptable). You will also need a registered nursing license as per your career in practice. Before you enter work as an educator, you also need a master's degree in nursing (MSN) or a doctorate (PhD, DNP, EdD). They will need to major in education or offer such a track.

Online BSN to MSN Nurse Educator Programs

South Dakota has one BSN to MSN Nurse Educator program at South Dakota State University. Students train to an advanced level of teaching diagnostics and treatment, also educational development, curriculum, assessment, and project setting.

Online Doctorate Nurse Educator Programs: DNP, Ph.D., or Ed.D.

The admission requirements for entering a doctorate program in nursing education are similar to the requirements for other nursing education programs but you will be required to hold a higher degree (MSN).

There are three doctorate programs for nursing education. The first is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), which is a degree reserved for practicing doctors. There are a few DNP programs available online, including at South Dakota State University.

The second is a Doctor of Nursing Philosophy (PhD). This degree is typically for those working toward a career in nursing research. South Dakota State University also offers a great program for this specific degree.

Some universities in some states offer online Doctor of Education (EdD) for nurse educators, however, no such program exists in South Dakota at this point in time.

Nurse Educator Licensing and Certification in SouthDakota

Nursing educators must uphold and adhere to all standards for ongoing licensure. This remains in place even if you do not work as a clinician beyond those minimum stipulated hours.

Also, consider becoming a Certified Nurse Educator (CNE). It is not obligatory, but your career may benefit from doing so. Currently, three types are available:

• CNE: The standard certificate is for those who work in academia
• CNEcl: The cl stands for "clinician"; it is aimed at professional trainers working in hospitals and clinics
• CNEn: The "n" stands for "novice" and is for novices of both types above

Certification also has a list of entry and maintenance criteria applicants must fulfill for ongoing eligibility.

RN licensing in South Dakota costs $100 for the application and $200 to take the exam. Endorsement is available on the supply of transcripts and criminal background checks. CNE costs one standard price regardless of state: $400 for NLN members and $500 for non-members.
