The DNP is typically for those who want to become practicing doctors, while the PhD is typically for research. The EdD is for those students who want to go on to teach, but these degrees are less common.

In Nevada, there are plenty of options for acquiring a nursing doctorate. One such option is the PhD program at the University of Nevada. Another is the DNP program at the University of Nevada at Reno.

The admission requirements for entering a doctorate program in nursing education are similar to the requirements for other nursing education programs, but you will be required to hold a higher degree (MSN).

Nurse Educator Licensing and Certification in Nevada

Nursing educators in Nevada are required to continue to adhere to the RN standards required at the time of application, even if they do not intend to work in practice in any meaningful way.

Consider certification to benefit your career. However, it is not mandatory. There are three types of certifications from CNE:

  • CNE type one is for academic staff. This may include other typical responsibilities of college and university professors
  • CNEcl is the second type. It is for educators of medical professionals
  • CNEn is the third type. It is for novices of both the other types – for those with less than three years of experience

Much like licensure, certification requires holders to adhere to and maintain a list of eligibility criteria.

RN licensing in Nevada costs $100 for the application and $200 for the examination. There is also a $40 fingerprint fee. Endorsement costs $105 plus the $40 fingerprint fee. CNE is one cost in all states: $400 for NLN members and $500 for non-members.
